Merrimack River Fishing Report #3
May 30, 2008

The striper fishing over the Memorial Day weekend was not very good. There were lots of fish around but they were not feeding. I fished a couple days and we only caught a few stripers. There was a lot of boat traffic and that didn’t help. Also, the tides were not good with lows very early and incoming during the morning hours. In addition, the inshore water was pretty cold. That is how it was. Now let me tell you about this week beginning on Tuesday.

Tuesday morning it was quiet with little boat traffic. I didn’t have a charter and went out to have some “captain’s time fishing”. When I passed under the Gillis Route 1 Bridge I saw terns diving to the water surface with their excited calls. The harbor was full of breaking stripers. They weren’t big but they were hungry. I caught and released a dozen or so. As the action slowed I went over to the Salisbury shore where I picked up some bigger fish that didn’t show until a fly passed by. I caught and released a dozen or so before it slowed down. Then I tried the upper end of Joppa Flats where I got a lot of stripers up to the mid twenty inch range. It was a very enjoyable morning of fishing!!

As the week progressed the fishing continued to be very good. There were more and more larger stripers. A few keepers were caught on flies and soft baits. Wednesday the river was alive with breaking fish from the #13 to#15 buoys. Every morning that I was out we caught lots of stripers some just shy of keeper size. The fish are very strong an even a small schoolie gives a good fight on the fly or light spinning rods. One morning I used my 6 WT fly rod and after catching a couple mid-twenty inch stripers I decided I better go back to my 8 WT. I was concerned that my 6 WT might break on one of the larger stripers. I have seen it happen to one of my clients.

The fish have been showing up in different areas in the early morning. I think that the water temperature has been having an impact. The water can be 45 degrees on one side of the tide line and 58 degrees on the other. Stripers and their prey prefer the warmer water.

This morning one of my friends said he that he brought a very big striper to boat side but as he fumbled to get the Boga grip it broke his leader and got away. He wanted to weigh and measure it before releasing. Jim was fishing up river somewhere around the high tide.

This spring season has been more like the ones I recall from a few years ago, before the two exceptionally wet ones the last couple of years.

The cost of fuel is affecting all of us. I only raised my rate by $25 for a half day charter and hope I can hold it there for the season. Gas on the water is over $5 per gallon!

Merrimack River Report #2

Last Monday was a very windy day. I had a client from Maine along with his adult son. Both Gary and Eric, his son, have done a lot of fishing over the years but had mostly fished for stripers with bait. Given the strong winds and the fact that I had found most good fishing up river where the water temperature was warmer, I took them up in the vicinity of Eagle Island. The tide was coming in within a couple hours of high. My fish finder indicated that there were lots of fish around but they were not hitting the spin lures they tried. I think they only caught one or two small schoolies as we tried lots of spots in the area. Then as the tide slackened the stripers began to feed. Both Gary and Eric began catching fish. The most effective lure was my jig head Fin-S rig. The fishing was decent for the next two hours and they caught about 15 stripes with a few that measured in the low twenty inch range.

I waited a day for the weather to settle down and then did some fishing on my own. I fished the upper area of Joppa Flats where I got into some nice mid-twenty inch stripers that like the chartreuse/white clouser.

This morning there were stripers hitting pretty well on Joppa Flats? There were a few fishermen who waded out. Two guys using fly rods did pretty well. I saw them get a half dozen fish. I brought in 3 or 4 with my fly rod using a Ray’s Fly pattern. One nice healthy striper was about 26 inches. It gave me a great fight. A couple of friends said they had a few nice fish hit Sluggos on lower Joppa near low tide.

Merrimack River Fishing Report #1

I am a bit tardy in getting out my first report. I spent a week down on the Cape as a vacation with my wife and to get some early first stripers. I fished May 8-10 off of jetties and wading at good places along the south side. I covered the range extending fro Bass River to Chatham. The first few days I could not find fish although I got information from a few tackle shops. Finally I had my first hit on my spinning outfit using a Yozuri swimming lure. I was on a jetty with the tide pretty low so I couldn’t get to it without potentially falling on the slippery rocks. I tried but finally broke the line trying to raise it up out of the water. My first fish went swimming off with my lure! It was another lesson in being prepared with the right gear for a particular fishing location. I had better results the next day as I was wading in the Monomy waters off of Morris Island. I caught and released 3 or 4 stripers using swimming plugs and jigs rigged with Fin-S soft baits. I got a couple more fish the last couple days I was there. Overall the fishing was less productive than a year earlier when I was down on the Cape. I think that the weather was a big factor. There were strong winds from the noth and east and the water was colder.

I launched my boat Wednesday and did some fishing up the river where I did mark some fish with my fishfinder. Theater temperature was in the low fifties at the surface. The fish were holding in deep pockets and I couldn’t get them to hit anything I through out. The next day I tried again and that time brought a feisty 25-inch striper to the boat. But it was my only fish. When I got home I found that I had a call from an angler in Portsmouth who wanted to know if I was available to charter this morning. I told him I was but that the fishing was slow. He said he was a fly fisherman and wanted to give it a try. We left the marina as the tide was approaching high about 8:30 am. We fished the area around Eagle Island where I marked lots of fish. Just as the earlier times we could not get hits at first but as the tide slackened Joe caught a schoolie on one of his flies (chartreuse/white). Then I nailed one with my spinning rod using one of my custom jig head rigged Fin-S.
As time went on we both were catching stripers with some of the better ones at over twenty inches. When the action slowed we moved down river near Ram Island where I caught a nice striper just under legal length. Overall it turned out to be a pretty good morning.

I had reports of stripers breaking water in Newburyport Harbor last night and friends out early this morning had good action down by Plum Island. A couple days ago a bait fisherman brought in a 17 pound keeper while fishing from shore at Mosley Park.

I think it is safe to say that the Merrimack River striper season is underway.

Tight lines!
