How Ibiza's Party Started | Best Party Destination in The World

People fly from all over the world to Ibiza to enjoy the island’s legendary club culture, where they spend the evenings dancing to the best DJs on the planet. The history of the island was created in its clubs and on its beaches, but let’s explore how it all started.

History of Ibiza Music

Ibiza’s ubiquity is frequently linked to the hippies of the 1970s. The island was already thriving, though, in the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, and the early 1960s, when Ibiza life was highly bohemian. Long before the hippies arrived, explorers, authors, painters, and other artists were working and living on the magical white island.

Since the Spanish Civil War, Ibiza has been isolated, which meant that early travelers were tolerated and warmly encouraged. Ibiza saw a boom during the ‘flower power’ movement in the 1960s when hordes of progressive hippies from all over Europe descended on the Balearic Island, drawn by its laid-back attitude, pristine natural beauty, and possibly its excellent weather.

The tourism boom began in earnest in the 1970s and has generally persisted. Additionally, it witnessed the beginning of the discos, which would shape its history until now. Balearic house took off in the 1990s after rave became popular in the 1980s, and today an eclectic mix of musical genres and people make it one of the most exciting and mind-blowing destinations to visit.

Amnesia and Pacha, two sizable clubs that emerged in the 1970s, were the primary innovators of clubland in Ibiza. Shortly after, the Ku Club—now more well-known as Privilege—joined the scene. Gradually, the notoriety of the clubs grew as they quickly rose to fashion, drawing the affluent and far-famed to enjoy the island’s vibrant nightlife.

Ibiza’s first club was called Amnesia. The majestic Finca (country home) from the 18th century, which underwent a multi-million renovation in the 1970s to become the storied superclub, still resides inside the club. Five generations of the Planells family had lived in the mansion until they decided to move into the city and sell it to a widow with aristocratic ties in April 1970. Antonio Escohotado, a young man, rented the space to operate as a “discotheque.” Indulging in an unfamiliar environment removed from daily routine, he desired a place where people might go out at night and forget their concerns. Amnesia was his term for it.

Pacha was the first contemporary-style club to launch in Ibiza in 1967. Pacha arrived in Ibiza six years later amid the hippy movement. Even back then, Pacha already had clubs on the mainland and was growing into a sizable empire. The Urgell brothers, Ricardo and Piti, who also served as the club’s first DJ, founded Pacha.

The party island is teeming with energetic, buzzing clubs like Eden, Ushuaia, Hi Ibiza, Ibiza Rocks, Es Paradis, and DC10. Ibiza events range from all-night raves to glitzy poolside gatherings as the island only continues to develop and become a party-goer’s paradise.
